| Diagnostic
Features |
| Body greatly elongate, almost fusiform.
Head and snout pointed. Mouth small, upper jaw ending
distinctly before eye (to below anterior margin of eye in
young); teeth in jaws in villiform bands, minute teeth
also on roof of mouth and on tongue. Lateral line
slightly arched above pectoral fins, becoming straight
posteriorly; no scutes. Caudal peduncle grooves present.
Dorsal fin with 6 spines and I + 25-30 soft rays. Anal fin
with one spine (completely embedded in large fish) and I +
18-22 soft rays; terminal 2-rayed finlet without inter-radial
membranes, present in dorsal and anal fins; soft anal fin base
distinctly shorter than soft dorsal fin base. Pectoral and
pelvic fins approximately equal in length. Colour dark
olive-blue or green above and white below; two narrow light
blue or bluish-white stripes along sides, with a broader or
yellowish stripe between them; fins dark with an olive or
yellow tint. |

Distribution |

| Circumtropical in marine waters.Western Atlantic from
northward to Massachusetts, southward to northeastern Brazil;
Eastern Atlantic distribution not well established, definitely
known only from the Ivory Coast to Angola; also reported in
the Mediterranean waters (Ligurian Sea). Common throughout the
Western and Eastern Indian Ocean and Western Central
Pacific. |
| Habitat and
Biology |
A pelagic fish,usually found at or near the surface (0-15
m), over coral and rocky reefs or sometimes far
offshore; may form sizeable schools. Feeds on crustaceans,
small fishes and squid.
Pelagic eggs and spawning generally occurs during the
summer. |

and lines. An excellent sportsfish; also with gillnets
and purse
seines, on trolling
lines and other line gear. The total catch reported for
this species to FAO for 1999 was 20 356 t. The countries with
the largest catches were Indonesia (14 830 t) and Philippines
(4 500 t). Marketed fresh, smoked and dried salted. |
